Overview of the data product archive
The following table shows an overview of the available data products of the UV radiation monitoring service based on ozone measurements made by the GOME instrument aboard the ERS-2 satellite. Some general notes are given below the table.

Notes on the product archive
GOME-based assimilated ozone fields, the basis of the UV index and UV dose, are avaiable for the period August 1995 up to May 2003.
- The clear-sky UV index and the daily UV dose are based on a given action spectrum:
- erythemal
- The action spectrum for the susceptibility of the caucasian skin to sunburn (erythema) by UV radiation, adopted as a standard by the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (International Commission on Illumination, CIE).
- DNA-damage
- The action spectrum which describes the effect of UV radiation on DNA in the human skin, proposed by R. B. Setlow (1974).
- The daily UV dose is computed using cloud cover information on two geographic scales:
- Europe
- Based on Meteosat observation, available on a 1-hourly daily basis as of August 1998, giving daily UV dose data.
- whole world
- Based the ISCCP cloud database, available on a 3-hourly monthly basis, giving monthly averaged UV dose data.
- Note that the validation of the UV dose is only preliminary. An example of validation results can be found here.
- The UV index and UV dose are computed at latitude/longitude grid with cells measuring 0.5 by 0.5 degrees, which amounts to about 50 x 50 km at the equator. The resulting UV index values are written to a data file in HDF 4 format. Grid cell that lack sufficient data are marked as "no data": the have '-1' in the data file and are grey in the plot.
