UV index and UV dose

The UV index is one of the data products of the GOME fast delivery at KNMI. The UV index is based on the total ozone level 4 product, the distance from Earth to sun, and a climatological database of the Earth surface altitudes. This UV index processor will be used as baseline for TEMIS. The quality will be improved by including albedo and snow information in the product.

The UV index, the daily course of the sun position and the erythemal action spectrum will be combined to derive the integrated UV dose for clear-sky situations. This can be used as a reference for the maximum UV dose. In order to derive a realistic erythemal UV dose knowledge from the cloud fraction during is needed. This information will be taken from 1-hourly Meteosat data for a daily erythemal UV dose. Additionally, cloud fraction data from the ISCCP database can be used to obtain a climatology for the erythemal UV dose. An example of the monthly mean UV dose is shown below.
