Introduction

In order to test the long-range transport observations and model results the location of Mace Head station is used. The Mac Head station is located at the West coast of Ireland in a relatively clean environment. High concentrations of pollutants at the station usually originates from long-range transport events.

All overpass data for 2008 within 50 km of the station and with a cloud radiance factor of less than 50 %.

Timeseries of the FLEXPART calculations for NO2


This figure shows the partial column concentrations of NO2 above Mace Head station which can be attributed to long range transport of NO2 from North America, as simulated by the FLEXPART trajectory simulation program. Due to the limited lifetime of NO2 it can only cross the Atlantic Ocean when meteorological conditions (such as temperature and wind speed) are optimal.
